Red Dead Redemption > Grand Theft Auto

Red Dead Redemption Preview
WRITTEN BY: MIKE PULLANO

In a little over a month Red Dead Redemption will hit store shelves and while buzz is growing for the title it won’t be welcomed with the same pandemonium that it’s Rockstar sibling is known for. However I think many gamers will be pleasantly surprised when they see how Red Dead Redemption takes sandbox games beyond its car jacking counterpart.

GRAPHICS & GAMEPLAY:

The GTA series is known for it’s beautifully crafted and lively worlds and Red Dead Redemption is no different. However there is more than just a change of scenery in RDR. The game map is an astounding 3x times larger than Grand Theft Auto IV. With the increase in scale RDR also has an improved Euphoria physics engine that allows more control in gunfights. With more control comes new mechanics like the slow motion Dead Eye ability for pinpoint accuracy. Shooting a gun out of enemy’s hand anyone? That’s right….badass! You mix all of that with a leveling system that allows your character to grow and improve of the course of the game and you have system that is not only more gratifying than GTA but also more fun to play.

STORY:
As can be expected from any Rockstar game, RDR will be packed with interesting and eccentric characters but it is the main character John Marston that will take RDR’s story beyond the Bellic. Marston is not a clean slate trying to start over like many of the GTA protagonists, Marston has something to live and fight for, his family. His violent past has caught up with him and to keep his family safe he has to hunt down his former gang leader, Bill Williamson. Unlike the GTA games where the player is simply thrown into the world to make something of themselves there is a very specific goal in Red Dead Redemption. Find and kill Bill Williamson. This direct approach to the narrative will undoubtedly lead to a more involved story and a better-paced adventure.

A WORLD MORE ALIVE THAN LIBERTY CITY:
Having played through every Grand Theft Auto game I can admit that the game world no longer excites me as it once did. As beautiful and populated as GTA IV was I couldn’t help but feel detached from the world itself. Yes I could cause mayhem and destruction as I saw fit but never did the world reach out to me. RDR plans to change that with a world that is filled with random occurrences where no one is safe in the Wild Wild West. The ecosystem of the game is populated with predators and prey both of which you can hunt or be hunted by. While crossing the plains the player must be weary of wolves, bears, looters and bandits all of whom make the citizens of Liberty City look more like residents of Pleasantville. No longer will you have to seek out action as in GTA IV because in RDR it will find you.

MULTIPLAYER:
Lastly, no marquee game can come without a multiplayer feature of some sort. Rockstar made its first real foyer into the multiplayer realm in GTA IV and the trend is continuing with Red Dead Redemption. Luckily it looks like Rockstar is improving upon the multiplayer features as well by offering some co-op features to the Free Roam multiplayer games. They are doing their best to take the epic single experience into the multiplayer realm and if they succeed it could one of the better 3rd person multiplayer games on the market.

If you still aren’t convinced take a look at some of the screen shots below or the gameplay mechanics video.
